We strive to utilize recyclable and compostable packaging throughout our product lines. Please check with your local municipality to confirm their capabilities to recycle our products.
Great question! A large percentage of commercially available yerba mate is processed using drying methods where the harvested mate leaves have direct contact with smoke throughout the process. While this drying method produces a distinct smoky flavor profile that is often associated with yerba mate, the direct contact may also contribute to the adverse effect of producing Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) that may potentially be detectable in the finished product. For that reason, Guayakí Yerba Mate is processed using air-dried methods that utilize indirect heat sources; a process that Guayakí has been an industry leader in innovating. Our loose leaf, mate bags, cans, and bottles are made with 100% air-dried mate. Guayakí loose leaf and 75ct. yerba mate bags with a ‘best by date’ of March 25, 2024 or later are made with 100% air-dried mate. When Guayakí began the shift to air-dried yerba mate over 10 years ago, we conducted testing with results demonstrating a significant reduction in PAH content as compared to wood-dried yerba mate. Guayakí does not source wood-dried yerba mate for our products, and all our current canned products use air-dried yerba mate.
