Journey to the Source

WE BELIEVE IN USING BUSINESS AS A FORCE FOR GOOD AND EMPOWERING CONSUMERS TO DRIVE SOCIAL CHANGE WITH THEIR PURCHASES. IMAGINE THE WORLD WE COULD CREATE IF WE DID THIS TOGETHER.

How it Works In order to drive change, first we need to throw out old models of doing business that do more harm than good.

Discretionary social good that takes a back seat to corporate profits. That’s got to go. Extractive contracts that offer the lowest price to farmers and feed destructive land practices. That’s not going to last very long. Squeezing the life out of workers while concentrating wealth at the top. That’s definitely out.

A Different Kind of Business
From making a profit, to innovation, investing in capital, and supporting workers, businesses have a lot to juggle. Using business as a force for good is often an afterthought, unless organizations make it a top priority by baking it into their business model and becoming a benefit corporation.

Guayaki’s benefit corporation legal structure mandates our shareholders to create social and environmental value, in addition to economic value. Our B Corporation certification means that we undergo a rigorous impact assessment and commit to continual improvement. We think it’s so important, we put the Certified B Corp logo on our packaging.

You’ll also find fair trade certified ingredients on our label, which guarantees that growers who harvest our ingredients are paid an above-market price plus a community-investment premium, are following good land practices, and are investing in their communities. Under fair trade, growers can increase their incomes, allowing them to earn a decent living and in many cases, gain access to better education and healthcare for their families.

A Strategy for Regeneration
We want your purchases of Guayaki Yerba Mate to accomplish more, such as protect critical rainforests—under threat from political and economic forces—and help indigenous forest stewards find economic independence and preserve their way of life.

That’s why we source yerba mate from rainforests and shaded farmland, pay a fair trade price to indigenous growers, and support programs that nurture ancestral knowledge and traditions. We want your purchases of Guayaki Yerba Mate to advance an inclusive and regenerative economy, so we ally with values-aligned suppliers, social impact investors, and workers with shared purpose and a willingness to embrace equity-diversity-inclusion initiatives and capacity building.

We want to change the way goods are transported and packaged, so we target net zero emissions by investing in forests, electric vehicles, and renewable energy, and we target renewable or minerally abundant packaging with recycled content.

Our Seven Aspirations
Our regeneration strategy—which evolves and responds to changes in our business and outside forces—stems from Guayakf’s seven aspirations. Aspirations such as zero waste and zero emissions are rigorous, but they are critical for ensuring the regeneration of our societies and ecosystems. Only with rigorous change can we live within the limits of our “planetary boundaries”and achieve the shared blueprint for peace and prosperity adopted by United Nations Member States (i.e., the 2015 Sustainable Development Goals). Ambitious targets, changing the status quo, and reflective adjusting and evolving are the building blocks to developing that world we imagined together.
