Hank Gaskell & Malia Lauer

Hana, HI > San Diego, CA

Hank and Malia grew up in the idyllic surroundings of the Hawaiian Islands; Hank from Maui and Malia from Oahu. Their passions include traveling the world to surf, dive, and explore. With inspiration from all over the world, Guayaki has recruited the duo to curate yerba mate recipes, with the extra challenge to source local ingredients; bonus points if the ingredients are from their own backyard. With a passion and strong skillset for beekeeping, you can bet their recipes always include some of their Hana Honey, which is like delicious, pure, liquid gold.

While Malia pursues her degree in physical therapy, Hank continues to pursue his accomplished surf career and constantly travel. Good luck tracking the two down when they’re actually home at the same time. They’re probably finding a rugged yet perfect weekend escape a stones throw from the bustling Southern California chaos.

In her free time, Malia enjoys volunteering at orphanages in Southern California and Mexico to practice her physical therapy methods and give back. Her support team consist of Hank and a whole lotta mate to share with the families she visits.

And of course, no trip would be complete without Mister Moku, their trusty sheep dog who also serves as dive master and recipe tester.

Rosemary Mate Latte

An herbal spin on the traditional mate latte

  1. We looked out in the garden and the rosemary was full force, so we decided to try it in everything that day. Our morning, as usual, started with a solid inch or two of loose leaf mate at the bottom of a french press.
  2. Here's what you'll need to spruce up your brew like we did: 4-6 sprigs of fresh rosemary, a spoonful of honey, milk or milk alternative, and a slice or two of lemon.
  3. Here's how to mix: Brew the mate and rosemary in the french press for about 5-10 minutes and then add the honey, milk, and lemon to each of our cups, as desired.
  4. The result is an amazing earthy, sweet and creamy brew leaving us pumped and ready to conquer our day.
