SEBASTOPOL Guayakí expands yerba maté sales

Sebastopol-based Guayakí, the leading U.S. producer of the South American drink yerba maté, is now selling its caffeinated beverage at all Tully's Coffee stores throughout the western United States and in Japan.

The 350-store Seattle company is the first major specialty coffee retailer to feature the entire line of Guayakí products.

Guayakí already sells its line of tea bags, loose-leaf packages and bottled beverages through natural food distributors and major supermarkets, with an estimated $5million in sales last year.

Yerba maté has grown in popularity in recent years with the surge in energy drinks. It is made from the leaves and twigs of the South American holly tree harvested in the rain forests of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil.

Guayakí, founded in 1996, markets its products as a way for consumers to help growers preserve a traditional way of life and encourage conservation of rain forests.
