Small tree, big power from the health files

The yerba maté is a small nutrient-packed tree native to South America. And until recently, most people were none the wiser that this botanical contains 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids and 11 antioxidants that, among other things, help sustain energy levels and reduce fatigue.

Since the old-school apothecary Kiehl's recently launched its new line of yerba-infused lotion, toner and cleanser, this little-known tree is finally getting its due. That's because when the makers at Kiehl's bottled this ingredient they produced a lightweight formula that genuinely addresses the dull-skin dilemma.

The moisturizer is super light and oil-free. And like each product in the line, it's made with a combination of kombucha tea, lemon fruit extract and honey. The softening formula promptly improves skin's texture and clarity while minimizing those unforgiving, not-so-fine lines.

Use it at night and layer it under a minimum SPF 15 during the day (try Clinique Superdefense with SPF 25 for $39.50 at Macy's). The gentle cleanser will wipe away oil, and the fans of toner will appreciate its soothing qualities.

The line ranges from $20.50 to $35 and is available at Kiehl's at South Coast Plaza or www.kiehls.com.
