A Cut Above
Guayaki Yerba Mate has the typical “Paraguayan” cut. In Uruguay, you will find that they prefer their mate cut to have even more powder. In Argentina, you will find the preferred cut is void of both powder and stems. In our years of research drinking mate in tea bags, through a French press, in a gourd or guampa, we have found that the Paraguayan cut delivers the smoothest balance of flavor.

Imparting the sweet nutty profile from the stem content balanced with the strength of the additional surface area from the powder, you have a full bodied mate with several characteristic layers of flavor. We like to consider the cut as a sort of “whole herb” approach, understanding that the stems add their own distinct function, and indeed carry an additional nutritional profile to the mate.

When packing a gourd, gently shaking the mate with a tilt allows the stems to rise, and the powder to drop. After inserting the bombilla, the gourd is tilted upright allowing the larger stems and leaf to surround the bombilla, and thus creating an additional “filter” layer that assists in keeping out the fine sediment. Without the powder, the mate needs additional time to impart its full flavor. With the powder, you get balanced flavor from the start, with the leaves and stem assisting in carrying the balanced flavor throughout the duration of the mate drinking session.

FIRST OF ALL JUST WANTED TO SAY I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE YERBA MATE!!!!!! I WAS SKEPTICAL AT FIRST BUT AM NOW A BELIEVER, IN IT NATURAL POWERS!!! I JUST SO HAPPENED TO WATCH SARA SNOW AND THOUGHT WHAT A WONDERFUL WAS TO BOND WITH LOVED ONES AND FRIENDS!!!!! I HAVE GIVEN SOME TEA BAGS OF YERBA MATE TO CO-WORKERS AND THEY SAID THEY WERE GOING TO ORDER SOME!!! THE NATURAL ENERGY IS AWESOME I HAVE BEEN A 5-6 CUP A DAY COFFEE DRINKER AND NOW DOWN TO ONE TO TWO WITH NO WITHDRAWAL DUE TO ME DRINKING THE MATE!!!!!! THANK YOU GUYS FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!!! love this stuff

started drinking this stuff in college...i switched to black tea but started getting headaches from the caffeine...went back to mate` and haven't looked back. thanks guayaki...LOVE the compostable package, wouldn't mind at all if the shipping box arriving at my house was recycled or reused too...

Gotta Have It

The first thing we do at home every morning is prepare our yerba matÃÂ©. We have ridden our motorcycles on overnight trips and have not failed to bring our own with us! We just prepare it in the hotel/motel coffee maker! A paper towel works as a filter if we forget our own. There is nothing like a cup of yerba matÃÂ© to start your day!

great mate, feel the good energy!

I love the Mate and the biodegrabable bag it comes in. I've been drinking this stuff for years, it's a better buzz than coffee doesn't have the same negative effects. Guayaki was the 1st Mate I'd ever tried and it's still the best Mate I've ever tried.

The Very Best Mate

I am a very long-time yerba mate drinker/lover. I have tried many different brands in my search for the best and least expensive. But ultimately, what wins out for me is taste -- and Guayaki does something special with taste! Perhaps it's the fair trade ethics. Perhaps it's the adorable employees. Perhaps it's the whole Guayaki culture. Much as I love these things ... it's the taste that keeps me returning and returning. Must have my Mate, every morning!

Great Stuff according to wife

My wife has been drinking yerba mate for years. It helped her get through her cancer chemo treatments, she will not start her day until she has had her yerba mate. My son who does triathlons also drinks it. In fact he is the one who introduced it to his mother. Good Stuff, thank you.
